Clowning

The eye of a clown.

Ever since I studied Shakespeare I realized that the clown, or fool, was more than a superficial entertainer.  The fool, the jester and the clown are very similar, but not identical.

The way I see it;

The king gave ‘licensed transgression’ to the fool or jester.

Jester and fools and clowns all are concerned to go beyond the normal, to over-state reality, to invert reality.

Like carnival – the fleshly enjoyed whilst the normal strict rules are set aside for a day or more – the clown is outside normality, and bourgeois life.  Deeper fears and desires walk around, along with the laughter.

The eye belongs to master teacher, Cirque Du Soleil’s lead Clown in Quidam and Director of the NY Clown Theatre Festival, Eric Davis.
