Palestininan woman and Israeli soldier – photograph by Noel Jabbour

I loved the teasing ambiguity of this photograph at Boca Raton Museum Of Art – dare we hope that something good might, just might, be passing between them – some kindness instead of cruelty, some recognition instead of hatred?  Is the hand about to become a fist?  Is she touching his chest in an appeal such as she might make to her son? Does the ambiguity shift the photograph from documentary to fine art?  Does the space created by the ambiguity make the art?

  1. Great photo. Thank you for sharing. I am intrigued by his eyes locked to hers and how his half open hand might represent the battle to fight off his werewolf/ animale/ aggressive side he is even more preoccupied with than the ‘physical discussion’ he has with the woman. It represents a bit the state Israel is in right now – on the one hand the educated, developed, enlighted, Western style democracy, on the other hand the always well-fortified, geared up for war, bellicose prisoner of its own situation. Once again, thanks for sharing.

      1. Yes. But even more so he/ soldiers make up the face of Israel the people around me (in general Europeans, in particular Germans) perceive as this is what they see in the news. I live with the fact that I have constantly to explain my fellow citizens my other fellow citizens. And so it now even influences my art and my writing.
