Science as metaphor for the spiritual (and vice versa?) – Magnetism and Harmonization

Recently I was knocked out when a colleague mention in his presentation on physics and spirituality the use of – iron filings, paper and a magnet – to show harmony and magnetic patterning.

It was the only thing I remembered from my rather dodgy science lessons – but as a metaphor it has influenced me deeply all my life.

‘Rimstar.org’ has done a very good job at showing what I vaguely remember from many years ago –

*
Steven Halpern has been working on sound and healing for decades

In this video they use an (unnecessarily complicated?) machine to show the effects of his chanting in a pyramid.

https://sunwalked.wordpress.com/2013/06/16/healing-sound-made-visible/

I don’t actually like much of Halpern’s music – too electronic.

However this guy blows me away –

What he’s chanting here roughly means, Oh God. How I revel in you, you are the fragrance of life. Help me know wisdom. Like the fruit on the vine, eventually it will fall and rot away, and then begin anew as another vine. Like the fruit bound to the vine, such am I bound to the unnecessities of life. Help me become free of them so that my spirit can grow and become one with you again.

It is a lesson in mystical oneness and perennial philosophy, which I summarize as Awaken:Detach:Serve. However it is also a lesson in how true depth – in this case of this Dutchman’s art of chanting – can reach across cultural and religious gaps – 1.3 millions hits so far. (Astonishing!)

*
As a metaphor the magnet-harmonics of iron filings has greatest relevance for me to the idea of psycho-spiritual integration within – and/or ‘at-one-ment’.

But it also relates to healing – for example chanting Om or just humming causes the chest to vibrate – personally I’m hoping that is good for IPF!

Interestingly one spiritual source appears to present love as a magnetic force;

Know thou of a certainty that Love is the secret of God’s holy Dispensation, the manifestation of the All-Merciful, the fountain of spiritual outpourings. Love is heaven’s kindly light, the Holy Spirit’s eternal breath that vivifieth the human soul. Love is the cause of God’s revelation unto man, the vital bond inherent, in accordance with the divine creation, in the realities of things. Love is the one means that ensureth true felicity both in this world and the next. Love is the light that guideth in darkness, the living link that uniteth God with man, that assureth the progress of every illumined soul. Love is the most great law that ruleth this mighty and heavenly cycle, the unique power that bindeth together the diverse elements of this material world, the supreme magnetic force that directeth the movements of the spheres in the celestial realms. Love revealeth with unfailing and limitless power the mysteries latent in the universe. Love is the spirit of life unto the adorned body of mankind, the establisher of true civilization in this mortal world, and the shedder of imperishable glory upon every high-aiming race and nation.1

“Ai,” the traditionalĀ Chinese characterĀ for love (ꄛ) consists of aĀ heartĀ (åæƒ, middle) inside of “accept,” “feel,” or “perceive,” (受) which shows a graceful emotion. It can also be interpreted as a hand offering ones heart to another hand.

Mantra text

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra reads:

In Devanagari:ą„ ą¤¤ą„ą¤°ą„ą¤Æą¤®ą„ą¤¬ą¤•ą¤®ą„ ą¤Æą¤œą¤¾ą¤®ą¤¹ą„‡ ą¤øą„ą¤—ą¤Øą„ą¤§ą¤æą¤®ą„ ą¤Ŗą„ą¤·ą„ą¤Ÿą¤æą¤µą¤°ą„ą¤§ą¤Øą¤®ą„ ą„¤ą¤‰ą¤°ą„ą¤µą¤¾ą¤°ą„ą¤•ą¤®ą¤æą¤µ ą¤¬ą¤Øą„ą¤§ą¤Øą¤¾ą¤Øą„ ą¤®ą„ƒą¤¤ą„ą¤Æą„‹ą¤°ą„ą¤®ą„ą¤•ą„ą¤·ą„€ą¤Æ ą¤®ą¤¾ą¤®ą„ą¤°ą¤¤ą¤¾ą¤¤ą„ ą„¤ą„¤In (IAST transliteration):Om tryambakaį¹ƒ yajāmahe sugandhiį¹ƒ puį¹£į¹i-vardhanamurvārukam iva bandhanān mį¹›tyormukį¹£Ä«ya māmį¹›tāt

In some Hindu Religious books the complete mantra has been mentioned as:-

“OM Hrom Om Joom Sah Bhurbhuvah Swh Om tryambakam yajāmahe sugandhim pushti-vardhanam urvā rukamiva bandhanān mrityormukshÄ«ya māmritāt Bhurbhuvah Swarom Joom Sah Hrom Om”

which is its Tantric version.

[edit]Literal Meaning of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra

Word to Word meaning of the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra:-

ą„ aum = is a sacred/mystical syllable in Sanatan Dharma or Indian religions, i.e. Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism,[3]
ą¤¤ą„ą¤°ą„ą¤Æą¤®ą„ą¤¬ą¤•ą¤®ą„ tryambakam = the three-eyed one (accusative case),
ą¤Æą¤œą¤¾ą¤®ą¤¹ą„‡ yajāmahe = We worship, adore, honour, revere,
ą¤øą„ą¤—ą¤Øą„ą¤§ą¤æą¤®ą„ sugandhim = sweet smelling, fragrant (accusative case),
ą¤Ŗą„ą¤·ą„ą¤Ÿą¤æ puį¹£hį¹i = A well-nourished condition, thriving, prosperous, fullness of life,
ą¤µą¤°ą„ą¤§ą¤Øą¤®ą„ vardhanam = One who nourishes, strengthens, causes to increase (in health, wealth, well-being); who gladdens, exhilarates, and restores health; a good gardener,
ą¤‰ą¤°ą„ą¤µą¤¾ą¤°ą„ą¤•ą¤®ą¤æą¤µ urvārukam iva = like the pumpkin (in the accusative case),

Note:- urvārukam: ‘urva’ means “vishal” or big and powerful or deadly. ‘arukam’ means ‘disease’. Thus urvārukam means deadly and overpowering diseases. (The pumpkin interpretation given in various places is also correct for the word urvārukam, but not apt for this mantra). The diseases are also of three kinds caused by the influence (in the negative) of the three guį¹‡as and are ignorance (avidyā), falsehood (asat, as even though Vishnu is everywhere, we fail to perceive Him and are guided by our sight and other senses) and weaknesses (į¹£aįøripu, a constraint of this physical body and Shiva is all powerful).

ą¤¬ą¤Øą„ą¤§ą¤Øą¤¾ą¤Øą„ bandhanān = “from captivity” {i.e. from the stem of the cucumber} (of the gourd); (the ending is actually long a then -d which changes to n/anusvara because of sandhi)

Note:- bandhanān: means bound down. Thus read with urvārukam iva, it means ‘I am bound down just as by deadly and overpowering diseases’.

ą¤®ą„ƒą¤¤ą„ą¤Æą„‹ą¤°ą„ą¤®ą„ą¤•ą„ą¤·ą„€ą¤Æ mrityor mukshÄ«ya = Free, liberate From death
ą¤®ą¤¾ą¤®ą„ą¤°ą¤¤ą¤¾ą¤¤ą„ mā amritāt = (give) me immortality, emancipationy

[edit]Simple Translation

OM We worship Shiva, the Three-eyed Lord who is fragrant and who nourishes and nurtures all beings. As is the ripened cucumber (with the intervention of the gardener) freed from its bondage (to the creeper) May He liberate us from death for the sake of immortality. OM[4]

The Tree of Contemplative Practices

The Tree illustrates some of the contemplative practices currently in use in secular organizational and academic settings. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list. Below the Tree you will find links to descriptions of many of these practices as well as a more in-depth description of the Tree and image files for downloading.

We hope to soon offer more information and resources onĀ allĀ of the practices listed on the Tree. Thank you for your patience!

Understanding the Tree

On the Tree of Contemplative Practices, the roots symbolize the two intentions that are the foundation of all contemplative practices: cultivating awareness and developing a stronger connection to God, the divine, or inner wisdom. The roots of the tree encompass and transcend differences in the religious traditions from which many of the practices originated, and allow room for the inclusion of new practices that are being created in secular contexts.

The branches represent the different groupings of practices. For example,Ā Stillness PracticesĀ focus on quieting the mind and body in order to develop calmness and focus.Ā Generative PracticesĀ come in many different forms (i.e. prayers, visualizations, chanting) but share the common intent of generating thoughts and feelings of devotion and compassion, rather than calming and quieting the mind. Please note that these classifications are not definitive. For example, mantra repetition may be considered a Stillness Practice rather than a Generative one.

Any activities not included on this Tree (including those which may seem more mundane, such as gardening, eating, or taking a bath) are a contemplative practice when done with the intent of cultivating awareness, or developing a stronger connection with God or oneā€™s inner wisdom. We offer a free download ofĀ a blank TreeĀ so that you can customize it and include your own practices.

Overtone Music and its Network

Where would you go for your didgeridoo? Well Jonathon Cope plays, teachers and sells the didge for a living as part of his interest in overtone and other more unusual music.

What is overtone music?

Try the Wikipedia article if you want heavy-duty information but ……

According to the Overtone Music Network (an open public social network for music which contains elements of instruments with a high content of overtones like a didgeridoo, gong, jew’s harp, singing-bowl, tambura or other instruments and as well overtone, harmonic or throat singing.)

What are Overtones?

In most cases where a sound is created by natural means (such as a musical instrument or the human voice), a number of higher tones is produced in addition to the fundamental pitch. These higher tones are called overtones, partial tones, or harmonics. The sequence of these tones is called the overtone series, harmonic sequence, or sequence of natural tones. The combination of the fundamental and the overtones is the frequency spectrum of a tone.

The Logo ą«

The logo of Overtone Music Network is ą« – OM – an ancient syllable from india which means: Ā»Space will be openĀ« or Ā»Space, open!Ā«. You can find it at the beginning of many Hindu texts as a holy exclamation to be called out at the start and the end of a reading of the Vedas or originally to any prayer or mantra. OM is an expression for the philosophy that every human being is it’s own cosmos. Cosmos means that the universe is regarded as a well-ordered, harmonious whole in your heart and mind, also expressed in your own overtone and harmonic singing and chanting.
